Temporary Extension to Algiers Ferry Hours
Good news for Algiers Point businesses – ferry hours will be extended on a trial basis from 10/12/15 through Mardi Gras 2016.
New Canal Street to Algiers ferry schedule
Mon-Thurs 6am-9:45pm
Friday 6am-11:45pm
Saturday 10:30am-11:45pm
Sunday 10:30am – 9:45 pm
Boats leave the West Bank every 30 minutes on the hour and half hour.
Some thoughts on these changes
- Weekend hours need to be more consistent and start earlier
- The ferry will remain pedestrians only, although the history is there to support car traffic as well
- We miss free ferries, but the current charges are $2 per crossing. That’s still a bargain, particularly for tourists who want to wander around in the Point.
- Rider participation will hinge on the ferries remaining in service every day without the mechanical breakdowns we’ve seen in the past
Hopefully, enough riders will use the ferry to keep the extended hours in place beyond Mardi Gras.
